precipitous way. So I do share some of these emotions and a sense of shame.

Theresa May, the former British Prime Minister, said there was a huge setback in UK foreign

policy and interpretation of the war. Do you share that view as well?

Well, I think it's a much bigger stain on the United States' reputation. I think Britain,

at some stage when the Americans said they were leaving, tried to form a group with the

Germans and the French to say, "I understand why that wasn't possible because the Americans

were too poor." But we're essentially at the mercy of decision-making in the White

House. I don't think there was any sense in the UK that we should end our involvement

with Afghanistan quite so quickly. So we are, as an ally of the United States, we were in

their hands.

It's a big debate, of course, about taking a number of asylum seekers from Afghanistan.
